Project Overview

World Bank – Pioneering Marine Spatial Planning in Morocco – report design

Pioneering Marine Spatial Planning in Morocco – an Opportunity to Articulate Conservation and Development’ is a technical report exploring methodologies to support Moroccan fishery conservation through marine spatial planning. As an excerpt from the report’s executive summary explains:

Marine spatial planning is a powerful tool for developing MPAs because it involves stakeholders in a transparent way throughout the planning process. It entails a major shift from managing marine resources sector-by-sector to an integrated approach. During this process, the views of key stakeholders and public opinion are included. Threats to users and natural resources are identified, and tension areas are mapped out to diminish conflict and enhance opportunities. The process involves learning and knowledge-sharing through a participatory, evidence-based, and multidimensional approach.”

Leveraging human-centric design

Brett Jefferson, our founder and creative director, was the senior design lead on this project. With 25+ years of design experience, he set the tone for how TEA produces World Bank publications. He brought the content to life using human-centric design principles. He also incorporated infographics and employed considered typography while delivering a distinct and culturally relevant design style for each publication.

Crafting spacious and engaging layouts

Using a mix of curated and World Bank archival photography, Brett created spacious and engaging page layouts that left readers turning from page to page in delight. His goal with all publication design projects is for the reader to be completely unaware of the design. If a reader can effortlessly and deeply engage with the content, then his remit as a designer has been achieved…

Seamless collaboration

This project involved close collaboration with Jen Stastny, an award-winning writer and strategic communications expert specialising in sustainability. We integrated her writing and editing talent with our creative expertise for this project.

The result: a world-class publication

As specialist designers for various sustainability sectors, we confidently delivered a high-quality design output. For this project, we leveraged our experience and expertise to suggest appropriate and engaging imagery and messaging that articulates the complexities and nuances of fishery conservation in a unique and impactful manner.

I have worked with The Ethical Agency on several publication and report design projects now and am blown away by their ability to reflect sustainability concerns in their designs and image selection. A great, deadline-driven team to work with.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Let's answer some questions you may have

What was the brief for this project? +

The World Bank commissioned The Ethical Agency to design a report on pioneering marine spatial planning initiatives in Morocco — a technically detailed publication aimed at policymakers and development practitioners working on ocean governance in the MENA region.

What made this publication design challenging? +

Marine spatial planning reports contain complex technical data, maps, and regulatory frameworks that must be communicated clearly to a non-specialist policy audience. TEA's design translates this complexity into a professional, readable publication format.

How does TEA approach technically complex report design? +

TEA works closely with the client's technical teams to understand the content hierarchy and key messages before developing a layout system that guides the reader through complex material with clear visual signposting and well-structured data presentation.

Does TEA have experience with blue economy and ocean governance topics? +

Yes. TEA has designed numerous publications for the World Bank focused on Africa's blue economy and sustainable ocean development, giving us strong subject familiarity and an understanding of the audiences these publications are designed to reach.

What formats was the report produced in? +

The publication was produced in both print-ready and digital PDF formats, formatted to World Bank standards and optimised for global distribution through the Bank's open knowledge platform.
