Project Overview

World Bank – Blue Economy for Resilient Africa Program – report design

We have had the privilege of producing dozens of publicly available publication designs for the World Bank on topics related to the Blue Economy in Africa, which supports and drives awareness for developing countries bordering an ocean.

Each World Bank project is unique as they usually relate to a different country for each project. Thus far, our creative director, Brett Jefferson, has designed World Bank publications for Tunisia, Lebanon, Congo, Nigeria, Iraq, Mozambique, Morocco, and Egypt (and still counting).

Working with the Blue Economy for Resilient Africa Program, Brett designed a series of publications about stimulating and protecting the Blue Economy in Africa.

The African Union estimates that the Blue Economy will generate nearly US$300 billion for the African continent and create 49 million jobs. The ocean’s health is essential for these and other vital benefits, including food security, livelihoods, and biodiversity. Coordinated by the World Bank — an international organisation providing financial support to developing countries — the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Programme (WACA) aims to address ocean sustainability in West African nations. Launched in 2018, WACA seeks to improve the resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems in countries like Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Senegal, and many others.

Effortless collaboration

We collaborated with Jen Stastny — an award-winning writer and strategic communications expert specialising in sustainability — integrating her writing and editing talents with our creative expertise. The resultant collaboration led to a series of professional publications that successfully portrayed the challenges and complexities of sustainability for ocean-based African countries in various thematic areas, including pollution, jobs, marine spatial planning, financing, innovation and more.

The result: a world-class publication

As specialist designers for various sustainability sectors, we confidently deliver a high-quality design output. We used this experience and expertise to suggest engaging, appropriate imagery and messaging that effectively articulated the complexities and nuances of environmental topics in a unique and impactful manner.

This series of publication designs included several reports in various languages as well as a website design, flyers, invitations, and social media graphics.

I have worked with The Ethical Agency on several publication and report design projects now and am blown away by their ability to reflect sustainability concerns in their designs and image selection. A great, deadline-driven team to work with.
